Bekki James (bekki.tattoo) is a Gold Coast–based tattoo artist specialising in fine line, illustrative, and ornamental work. Her pieces balance precision with softness—quiet details, thoughtful composition, and linework made to heal beautifully.

"I’d say I’m inspired by movements like art nouveau and botanical illustration. I am also inspired by so many other artists that I follow and have got to work with".

Tattoos are like a visual diary—they reflect who you are, what you value, and the journey you’ve been on.

WHAT'S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR FAVOURITE TATTOO YOU HAVE EVER DONE?

My favourite tattoo I have ever done is a really small piece of fineline script. It was on a 82 year old lady who wanted her first and only tattoo. Her husband had recently passed away and after 60 years of marriage she wanted his name on her chest. We did it just under where her bra sits so that it couldn’t be seen. She said that she didn’t want to tell anyone about it - she just wanted it for her. It’s just a tiny piece of script but it will forever be my favourite tattoo.

HOW DO TATTOOS REFLECT SOMEONE'S PERSONALITY OR JOURNEY?

Tattoos are like a visual diary—they reflect who you are, what you value, and the journey you’ve been on. Some people use them to celebrate milestones, honor loved ones, or express their personality and beliefs. In short, every tattoo carries a story that makes the wearer unique.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTOOD ABOUT TATTOOING?

I wish more people understood that tattoo artists want you to love your tattoo as much as they do. So if you want something changed, or a different size, or different position - speak up! It’s on you forever and so we would rather you tell us what you think so that you walk away happy.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH CREATIVITY IN YOUR WORK?

I have a pretty specific style with being an illustrative artist and so usually people will give me an idea, an approximate size and a placement on their body and then I just run with it. I’ll draw my design the night before so it’s fresh in my mind the next day. I find this is the best way for me creatively.

TATTOOS CAN BE PERSONAL, HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR STYLE WITH YOUR CLIENTS STORY?

People usually book with me because of my style and so they usually resonate with it which helps. It’s a collaboration - between me and my client - no one person has more say than the other.

IF YOU WEREN'T A TATTOO ARTIST, WHAT OTHER CREATIVE PATH WOULD YOU FOLLOW?

I used to be a Pilates instructor before tattooing so I would probably be still doing that. I just honestly don’t know as nothing has ever given me the same level of fulfilment and satisfaction that tattooing has given me. It ticks every box for me.
